For when you want to do good works

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:10

Some times (most of the time?) the good works for which you've been created in Christ, the ones God prepared for you to walk in ahead of time, look like this:

Your five-year-old struggles to make her bed, part of the morning routine. Standing on her pillow, she grasps her quilt and pulls it as straight as she can. Unsatisfied with her work, she yells for your help, and you sigh.

The residue of breakfast is still on your hands, and all you see before you is a litany of domesticity, each task taking you further from that mysterious work you were made to do, your higher calling, the reason you exist.

But you rinse your hands and wipe them dry. Then you each take a side, smoothing the blanket, tucking the corners, chatting about nothing much at all. And with a sudden clarity you realize: "This is the good work, not the thing in the way of the good work, that God prepared for me to do today."
